Our fire pit safety tips seem obvious, but we wanted to share a quick reminder. We were prompted to write this because our neighbor set fire to the side of their house over the weekend, due to improper safety precautions.

  1. Pick a safe location Make sure your fire pit is well away from sheds, fences, trees and shrubs.

  2. Protect vulnerable users Keep children, pets and garden games away from the line of fire.

  3. Be prepared Keep a bucket of water, sand, or a garden hose nearby for emergencies.

  4. Stay put Never leave a lit fire pit unattended.

  5. Clean up properly Wait until the next day to clear all the ash and debris from the inside of the fire pit. Empty ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or garbage can. If the ashes are still hot, they can melt the plastic and cause a fire, which is what happened to my neighbor.

  6. Have fun!
